History

EchoStar has maintained a European business presence for over 20 years, supplying some of the region’s leading digital TV operators with state-of-the-art hardware and software solutions.

In 1988 EchoStar commenced operations in The Netherlands where it began to build a strong development and distribution team to supply digital set-top box solutions into the European, Middle East and African markets. In 1994, EchoStar further developed its European operation with the addition of a commercial and after-sales office in Madrid to oversee the Spanish market and key customer Via Digital.

Later EchoStar wanted to rapidly expand its engineering base in Europe and sought to acquire a UK based company. In 1999, Eldon Technology - itself founded in 1988 - became part of the EchoStar family and added a substantial degree of digital TV expertise. In addition to serving customers including Via Digital, Cyfrowy Polsat and Telefonica Latin America, EchoStar Europe designed a number of award winning products for use on DISH Network and Bell’s ExpressVu service (now BellTV) in North America.

In a move designed to increase operational efficiencies, EchoStar’s three European operations united under the same trading name of EchoStar Europe in 2006 which included the amalgamation of its engineering resources.

In January 2008, Echostar Technologies Corporation and EchoStar Satellite Services divisions were spun-off from DISH Network to form EchoStar Corporation. This enabled EchoStar Technologies to focus on the growth of its set-top box design and distribution business and to target new growth areas presented by cable and IPTV.

In Europe, EchoStar re-launched its business in September 2008 to focus solely on developing connected devices, applications and services for the multi-platform European, Middle Eastern and African markets. Since then, it has focused on establishing a new range of value-added products for the cable, IPTV and terrestrial markets. The company is also working closely with wholly owned subsidiary Sling Media to deliver market leading integrated place-shifting solutions to market and support consumer’s desire for TV Everywhere services.

Having its global headquarters in Englewood, Colorado, and with more than 2,000 employees worldwide, EchoStar has more than 25 years of experience designing, developing and distributing advanced award-winning television connected devices and related products for pay television operators in the cable, IPTV and satellite and terrestrial TV markets.
